Dr. Allswede has been the Assistant Dean of Clinical Education at the Chicago Medical School since November of 2021. Prior to his current position, Dr. Allswede founded the emergency medicine residency program at Sunrise Health GME in Las Vegas Nevada. Prior to that, he also founded the emergency medicine residency program at Conemaugh Health in Johnstown Pennsylvania. His emergency medicine career includes appointment to the University of Michigan (UM) Medical School where he was the Director of Resident Education at the Hurley Medical Center site of the UM Program in Emergency Medicine. He has also been appointed to the University of Pittsburgh Medical School where he received over $1 million in grant funding supporting his research in chemical biological and radiological terrorism detection and response.
Dr. Allswede has served as a tactical emergency medicine physician and subject matter advisor in the areas of chemical biological and radiological terrorism to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) during the Clinton Administration. In this capacity, he founded the Strategic Medical Intelligence initiative, one of the nation's first forensic epidemiology organizations, with the Pittsburgh field office of the FBI where he participated in multiple investigations. He was appointed to the National Domestic Preparedness Office, State and Local Advisory Committee where he advised the FBI Director, FEMA Director, and the Attorney General. Dr. Allswede also supported the United States Secret Service, Pittsburgh Field Office during Campaign 2000, and attended over 70 trips with the candidates. During the Bush (43) administration, he served as a subject matter expert to Interpol and co-authored the Interpol Bioterrorism Incident Pre-Planning and Response Guide. In this capacity, he worked with over 90 nations to develop forensic epidemiology systems.
Dr. Allswede served as the President of the Foundation for Osteopathic Emergency Medicine (FOEM) and ex officio board member of the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP) from 2019-2024. He received the Educator of the Year award from the ACOEP in 2016 for his work in promoting emergency medicine research and education by founding the ACOEP-FOEM Research Network. He is a Distinguished Fellow and currently the Physician Academy Chair of the National Academies of Practice, an organization supporting the development of interprofessional healthcare.
Dr. Allswede graduated from the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery and served an Osteopathic rotating internship at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital. He completed his emergency medicine residency at the Midwestern University and his critical care fellowship at the Chicago Medical School where he trained at Cook County Hospital during the HIV epidemic of the early 1990s. He is a US Army Medical Corps veteran and has served on a number of deployments.
